More than a trophy wife
During the time of the Incas, political and economic power was fully in the hands of men. However, women also played a crucial role in that society, and that is the case of the Coya.
The Coya was the main wife of the Inca because as many other kings you have heard of, this one also had numerous wives and concubines! But this girl was the legitimate and the most important one.
The secondary wives did not have the relevance in the empire as the Coya had. Indeed, the children of both the Inca and the Coya were unique and legitimate, those children conceived in the other women and concubines were the "Izuojapsichuric", which means the bastards, and only from the legitimate ones, the crown prince would be chosen as the next Inca.
